Major change in R-Day schedule. R-Days will now be held only every other month in 2012. While we will continue to hold them on the first Saturday in Logansport and the second Saturday in Royal Center, they will be held only in February, April, June, August, October and December. Feel free to use one of our large recycling bins strategically placed around Cass County. They are currently located at Oak Ridge, Pioneer Elementary School, 4-H Fairgrounds, Galveston and Walton.
MEDICINE COLLECTION DAYS: Thanks to support from Cass County Government and retired Logansport Police Lt. Cathi Collins, we have scheduled four collections of old/expired medications for 2012. Police will be on site to assist with the collections. Most will be held on our regular Logansport R-Days on April 7th, June 2nd, October 6th and on HHW Day which is now set for October the 27th. If you bring us pills, it is best to put them all in one large baggie and eliminate any personal information on containers. Medicine Collection Events are for the residential sector only! We will not accept sharps. Some pharmacies have exchange programs for those. However, failing that, sharps can be put in a sturdy plastic container such as a large beach bottle. Be certain to tape the lid on the container and write in large letters "SHARPS." They may then be placed in your trash.
Paper Shredding - Check with Peak Community Services to find out dates for the next event and costs.
EARTH DAY--Earth Day was a great experience this year. The weather was great and the "Berry Patch" was in great condition as the 600 plus students hiked through it on their learning adventure. The third grade students collected a total of 7,406 pounds of plastic bags this year. That is an increase of 20 more pounds than last year. Thanks to the volunteer effort of Rex Wolf and Central Indiana Recycling, the plastic will be recycled into outdoor decking, fencing, pallets, and other items. Thanks to all of you who helped in any way.
5th GRADE FIELD DAY--October 5th, 2011 was a mild, clear autumn day at France Park. I taught hundreds of Cass County students the importance of the three R's, recycling, reuse and reduce. The students were not only receptive, but they had a lot of good questions for me as well. I commend Cass Soil and Water for putting on this educational event every year.
TIRE AMNESTY DAY-- It is important to note that this event is for the residential and farming communities only...not business or industry. We reserve the right to turn away those entities on site. This annual event will be held from 9 A.M. until Noon on April 21st at the Cass County 4-H Fairgrounds.
E-WASTE DAY --This year we held the event at Oak Ridge on Morgan Hill Road and it proved to be a good venue. We started at 9 a.m. and by 11 we had filled nearly three semi trailers! A total of 263 vehicles went through the line and many of you donated money to help us offset our expenses. The total donated was $1543. For those of you who did not make our event, Oak Ridge has a large container just for electronics. Please call them for what they will accept and pricing. We will be doing another E-Waste Day next spring!
Collection of old or expired medications
Please see our new schedule above and adhere to the guidelines below.
Guidelines for Medicine Collection Days
1. All pills can be emptied into a large baggy and brought to the site. We will accept bottles of liquid, but you may want to take labels off of the bottles.
2. Please bring only medications.
3. We will not accept sharps under any circumstances. Some pharmacies do have exchange programs. It is permissible to put sharps into the trash if you put them into a sturdy container, tape the top and write the word SHARPS in large, clear letters.
Roll -Off Program-- the district continues to provide large roll-off containers for recycling at various locations around the county. The bins are located at Galveston, Walton, Oakridge and Pioneer Elementary School. This service is provided for residents outside the Logansport city limits who do not have curbside service. We can't accept any items from business or industry. We will accept cardboard, newspaper, number one and two plastics, cans and glass. We urge you to rinse your containers before recycling them. It also saves us a lot of bin space and money when you break down your cardboard boxes.
All of the materials accepted
in the curbside recycling
programs in Cass County are accepted at the R-Days.
HARDBACK BOOKS: We now take a limited number of hardback books at our
Logansport R-Days. If you have a large
number of hardback books please call the office at 574-732-9253 to let us know.
Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day: Household Hazardous Waste day was held--as promised--on October the 22nd of 2011 at the Logansport High School. Our vendor, Nugenesis of Mooresville, Indiana, helped us collect almost 20,000 pounds of potentially dangerous waste for recycling. The weather on that late October day was fair and resulted in 196 motorists bringing materials. Visitors were very generous with donations which totaled over $1,141. The event cost roughly $15,500 this year.
