EARTH DAY--Earth Day was a great experience this year. The weather was great and the "Berry Patch" was in great condition as the 600 plus students hiked through it on their learning adventure. The third grade students collected a total of 7,384.61 pounds of plastic bags this year. That is an increase of 1,286 pounds. Thanks to the volunteer effort of Rex Wolf and Central Indiana Recycling, the plastic will be recycled into outdoor decking, fencing, pallets, and other items. Thanks to all of you who helped in any way.

PLASTIC BAG CONTEST--The plastic bag contest is in full swing for 2009-2010. All Cass County 3rd graders are invited to collect, and recycle used shopping bags with the help of their schools & their wonderful volunteers. On the 2nd Friday of each month, school officials and volunteers bring large plastic bags stuffed to the top with smaller shopping bags to the 4-H Fairgrounds and have them weighed & recorded for their school. At the end of the contest in April, the school with the most weight in plastic is awarded a bench made out of recycled plastic announced on Earth Day. Here are the bag totals for each school as of December 11, 2009.

Fairview 202  Galveston 296    Landis 417.9    Thompson 327.8   Columbia 140.6    Pioneer 1,376.3   Franklin 155.4  Caston 1,354

TIRE AMNESTY DAY--The 2009 Tire Amnesty Day was a success for us all. We loaded eight and a quarter semi trailers with all sizes of tires. They will be recycled into playground cover, landfill cover, and also used as tire derived fuel. The program is also beneficial because it gets the tires off of the landscape and lowers the mosquito population. We personally want to thank all of the volunteers who helped that day. The next tire event will be on the 3rd Saturday of April 2010.

E-WASTE DAY -- The Cass County Solid Waste District normally holds our Electronic Waste Collection Day on the third Saturday in May. However, since Indiana now mandates that electronics manufacturers must recycle up to 60% of their own electronics at their own expense, the date of our annual event cannot yet be determined. We are also uncertain about what vendor we will be using. Please keep watching this web page for any updates. The E-Waste Collection event will also be advertised on the radio and in the Pharos Tribune.

Collection of old or expired medications--We will have three more collections of old or expired medications this year. There will be three at our regular Logansport R-Days at Riverside Park on Saturday, March 6th, June 5th and September 11th. The Last one will be part of our annual HHW Day at the Logansport High School on October the 23rd.. No sharps will be accepted at these events.

Guidelines for Medicine Collection Days

1. All pills can be emptied into a large baggy and brought to the site. We will accept bottles of liquid, but you may want to take labels off of the bottles.

2. Please bring only medications.

3. We will not accept sharps under any circumstances. Some pharmacies do have exchange programs. It is permissible to put sharps into the trash if you put them into a sturdy container, tape the top and write the word SHARPS in large, clear letters.

Roll -Off Program-- the district continues to provide large roll-off containers for recycling at various locations around the county.  The bins are located at Galveston, Tall sycamore Campground, Oakridge and Pioneer Elementary School.  This service is provided for residents outside the Logansport city limits who do not have curbside service.  We can't accept any items from business or industry.  We will accept cardboard, newspaper, number one and two plastics, cans and glass.  We urge you to rinse your containers before recycling them.  It also saves us a lot of bin space and money when you break down your cardboard boxes.

All of the materials accepted in the curbside recycling programs in Cass County are accepted at the R-Days.

HARDBACK BOOKS: We now take a limited number of hardback books at the Logansport R-Day the first Saturday of every month. If you have a large number of hardback books please call the office at 574-732-9253 to let us know.

Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day: Household Hazardous Waste day was held on October 31st at the Logansport High School parking lot. We served over 200 cars and took in $745 dollars in donations. NuGenesis kept the line moving at a steady pace and as always were very professional. We thank you, the public for your generosity & being responsible citizens.
