Department News
- The winter of 2011/2012 has been very mild through the first week of January. Through this period, CCHD has had a full-scale deployment of trucks for only two snow events - on November 29/30 and December 27. Three other minor snow events have been handled with minimal personnel and material. By comparison, by January 11th of 2011, at least 9 snow events had been handled by CCHD for the winter season. A typical measurable snow event will average at least $14,000 in extra costs for sand/salt material, fuel, and employee overtime costs. Wind, temperature and duration of the snow event can increase the time spent dealing with it and drive the cost up. At full force, CCHD has 21 plow trucks and 3 pickup trucks on the road to remove snow from roughly 900 miles of roadway. Each driver has an assigned territority, and is instructed to first plow high traffic priority roads, followed by secondary roads. The average snow route takes 6 to 8 hours to complete, which may vary according to snow amounts and other factors. Patience is appreciated during and following a snow event. CCHD's normal mode of operation for light and moderate snow events is to have all roads open to traffic on the first day following the end of snowfall. Day 2 and beyond involves continue widening and cleanup. Wind and now amounts can affect this schedule. Heavy snow events can also impact the time needed to open all roads.
- Patching of potholes has continued during the winter months on an as-needed basis, as weather and workload permit. Potholes can be reported by calling the office at (574) 753-3749.
- CCHD would like to encourage homeowners to help snow plow drivers protect lawns and structuresin or near the road right of way. Small flexible reflector sticks are often used to delineate the edge of the pavement or to mark culvert structures, curbs, or similar obstructions. This is very helpful to drive who plow the road.
